Inside Right Brake assembly removed Old brake lining New leather brake lining installed Techinics RS-1500 #1 RS-1500 During a concert recording Head stack removed to remove heads for Re-Lapping Head Stack after plastic cover is removed Worn heads First head loose I tried acetone on the locktite to remove screws holding the head in the case but it did not work well The next resorte was to chip away the locktite.  This worked and once I got all the lock tite away from the screws they came out easly.  Be careful in removing any screws you will have a much bigger problem if you strip out the screw heads. This may look drastic but no damage was done.  The play heads were also cemented into the shields with locktite.  I supported the edges of the shield case in a vice and used the plastic screw driver to protect the face of the heads will giving it a quick rap with the pliers.  The head popped right out! I had to use a different method with the other playback head.  It did not loosen up with the first rap and had to be driven all the way out the back.  I used a soft wooden dowel to protect the face of the head while gently tapping it with a hammer. The head is free read to be lapped! This is my method for hand lapping small heads.  Since any head that I have seen is machined with the head surface at a right angle to the case if you take two blocks as shown and put them together you can use the lower block as a guide to keep the new lap square.  The only trick is you must have an upper block that has two sides that are square.  I would check the head for squareness just to be sure before starting lapping.  Start with 400 grit wet dry paper and work the head in a swinging arc against the upper block while keeping it flat against the bottom surface.  Use 400 grit until you remove the wear grooves then work your way up through the grits all the way to 2000 and beyond if you want the ultimate polish.  You can also polish with a bit of fine rubbing compound and a leather strop. Beautiful restored machine
